Forms a protective coating for kiln shelves to protect from dripping glaze during firing. Simply mix the kiln wash with water to a creamy consistency and apply to the necessary parts with a brush.
To be mixed in the ratio 40 grams kiln wash to 60ml of water.
Kiln wash is designed to prevent your glaze from sticking to the kiln shelf, if it happens to come into contact with it during firing. As kiln shelves are generally made from hard ceramics, just like your pots, if any glaze melts onto the shelf it will become stuck.
Glaze usually only comes into contact with the shelf if something were to go wrong. Normally you would try to prevent the glaze coming into contact with the shelf by raising them off the shelf or wiping the glaze of the pot bottoms - however you cannot predict when an unexpected problem is going to occur: The glaze could run or split, your pot may tip over or you could accidentally over fire the clay causing it to melt down.
If you don't have any kiln wash to catch the glaze in one of these situations then: Your pot will stick to the shelf and be very difficult to move, you will have to grind all the glaze off of the shelf - messing up the smooth surface of your shelf, and any glaze that you miss will remain there eating through the shelf.
KAOLIN - This product is ready to use but can be difficult to apply and be powdery. Some people have 'recipes' for kiln / batt wash that mix in Kaolin at a rate between 20% and 50%. - It makes it much easier to apply (and goes further). *NB/ The more Kaolin Clay you use the more clay and the more 'sticky' the batt wash to the shelf (and your work). - We do sell Kaolin but we do advise that you experiment yourselves.
